Groupage or full container: the choice that decides your delivery date more than your budget

On an international move, two quotes can differ twofold without anything in the service described seeming to explain it. The difference lies in the shipping mode, groupage or full container, and it governs far more than the price: the timing, the number of handlings and your room for manoeuvre on the date. This dossier explains how to decide.

What distinguishes groupage from a full container?

With a shared load, your belongings travel in a container shared with other clients’ goods. They are first taken to a warehouse, consolidated with other shipments for the same destination, shipped, then deconsolidated on arrival before being delivered.

With a full container, the container is yours. It is loaded at your home or at the warehouse, sealed, shipped, and opened at destination without having been touched in between.

Everything else follows from that difference: the price, the timing, the number of handlings and your room for manoeuvre on the date.

Why does a shared load cost less and take longer?

Because you only pay for your volume, but you wait for everyone else. The container leaves when it is full, or when the shipping line requires. On a busy route the wait is short; on a secondary route it can stretch.

On arrival comes deconsolidation, which means a further pass through a warehouse and a delivery appointment that depends on local rounds. The lead time quoted for a shared load is therefore, by its nature, an estimate and not an undertaking, and it is a distinction the quote must state clearly.

Above what volume does a full container win?

As an order of magnitude, a twenty-foot container absorbs the contents of a well-furnished flat, a forty-foot one those of a family house. Below that, a shared load remains the natural choice; clearly above it, the full container becomes both simpler and cheaper, since you were paying for nearly all the space anyway.

The zone of hesitation sits around those thresholds, and that is where the question shifts: it stops being about volume and becomes about dates.

What the choice changes about risk

Every transfer point is a chance to damage or mislay something. A shared load adds two, at consolidation and deconsolidation, and it multiplies the hands that touch the boxes.

That does not condemn shared loads, which remain the commonest solution and work well. It simply makes two things more important still: a numbered, precise inventory, and written reservations on delivery, within the period that makes them admissible. A missing carton is almost always found, provided you can say which one.

How the choice interacts with your timetable

This is the point that decides matters in practice, more often than the budget.

If you are moving into a property where works are under way, or if your purchase is not yet signed, a full container leaves you flexibility: delivery fits your date. With a shared load the date is largely imposed on you, and the only adjustment left is storage, which is charged for.

So ask the question the other way round. Rather than asking what each option costs, ask the earliest and the latest date each one delivers, then set those two ranges against the date the property will genuinely be available.

How do you put the question in a quote?

Three lines are enough to make two quotes comparable.

The shipping mode named explicitly, shared load or full container, not a marketing phrase.

The delivery window at destination, with an earliest and a latest date, and a statement of what happens if it is exceeded.

Storage: who charges for it, from when, and who insures the goods during that period. It is the line that turns out costliest in the files that go wrong, and it is almost always the one nobody had read.

What Home Select organises for shipping your belongings

Settling in is prepared during the search: the date of the deed sets that of the delivery, and the contracts are opened before the arrival. Your Home Select property finder keeps that calendar with you, from the preliminary contract to the first night.

We introduce the international remover, the tradespeople of the fit-out and the concierge service that receives deliveries and prepares the house. Transport, customs and works are theirs, under their responsibility: our role is that you arrive in a house that is ready.

Frequently asked questions

Can you switch from groupage to a full container mid-way?

Once the goods are consolidated at origin, no: they are in someone else’s container. The switch is decided before collection, at the quotation stage, and it is only reopened if the volume measured on packing day differs markedly from the estimate. Ask how that case is handled, it is not rare.

Is a full container safer?

Above all it cuts the number of handlings, which is the main cause of breakage. It is sealed at origin and opened on arrival, with no intermediate transfer. That replaces neither the packing, nor the declared value, nor the reservations on delivery, but it removes several chances of damaging something.

What if my home is not ready when it arrives?

Storage takes over, and it is charged for. With groupage there is little room for manoeuvre since the date is imposed on you; with a full container, delivery is more easily aligned with your timetable. It is an argument that weighs heavily when works are under way in the property.

What distinguishes groupage from a full container?

With a shared load, your belongings travel in a container shared with other clients’ goods. They are first taken to a warehouse, consolidated with other shipments for the same destination, shipped, then deconsolidated on arrival before being delivered.

What should a groupage quote spell out?

The shipping mode named explicitly, the delivery window with an earliest and a latest date, and the storage terms: who bills it, from when, and who insures the goods in the meantime. These three lines make two quotes comparable.
