Bringing your car to France: customs relief, type approval, registration, to settle before loading it
Bringing your car over is almost always a sentimental decision before an economic one. It deserves to be taken with full knowledge, because the obstacle is neither transport nor customs: it is type approval. This dossier says what the customs relief covers, which documents to gather, how registration works, and how to decide.

Does the car come in under the removal relief?
When you transfer your residence from a country outside the European Union, a personal vehicle can be admitted among your belongings, on the same general conditions as the rest: it must belong to you and have been used for a minimum period before the transfer, and it must not be disposed of for a period after importation.
The principle is therefore the same as for furniture, and it is assessed in the same file: that is the subject of customs relief on a move to France. From an EU country the customs question does not arise in those terms, but the French registration formalities remain in full.
What documents are needed?
The foreign registration document, proof of ownership, evidence of customs clearance where relevant or the tax clearance certificate depending on origin, and the document attesting to the vehicle’s technical conformity. To which is added, for vehicles of a certain age, a valid French roadworthiness test.
None of those items is hard to obtain taken alone. Their order, though, matters: some can only be obtained once the vehicle has arrived, others must be requested from the manufacturer before departure, and in a country you will have left.
The real obstacle: type approval
This is where plans divide in two.
A vehicle approved for the European market has a certificate of conformity the manufacturer issues on request. What follows is administrative and holds no surprises.
A vehicle built for another market, typically North American or Asian, has no such document. It must then go through an individual approval procedure with the competent authority, which checks its conformity with European requirements. Depending on the model, that ranges from a long formality to a dead end: lighting, safety equipment, emissions, the list of points to bring into line can cost a sum bearing no relation to the value of the car.
The practical conclusion is clear. This question is settled before the car goes into the container, by asking the manufacturer whether a European certificate of conformity exists for that precise model and year. A negative answer does not always mean giving up, but it changes the budget and the timetable entirely.
How does registration work?
Online, through the dedicated national service, once the file is complete. The deadline after the vehicle arrives in France is short, of the order of a month, and it runs independently of your other settling-in steps.
It is a timetable constraint more than a difficulty. It does, however, run into a reality every new arrival knows: those months are already full, and an incomplete file is always discovered at the moment you have least time to spend on it.

Should you bring it at all?
The honest answer depends on three things, and on nothing else.
Type approval, first, which decides what is possible. The full cost, next, shipping and compliance work included, to be compared with what the same budget would buy locally. The intended use, lastly: a vehicle for a second home on the coast calls for different arithmetic from an everyday car.
Many plans settle themselves once those three lines are set side by side. And where the decision is not to bring the car, it is taken early, which leaves time to sell it properly in the country of departure rather than in a rush the week of the move.
What happens to a foreign driving licence?
That is a separate subject, with its own rules depending on the country of origin: some licences can be exchanged, others cannot, and time limits apply after you settle. It is handled alongside the other arrival formalities, like registering with the social bodies, and it is best started in the first weeks: exchange, where it is possible, is not instant.
What Home Select organises for your vehicle’s arrival
Settling in is prepared during the search: the date of the deed sets that of the delivery, and the contracts are opened before the arrival. Your Home Select property finder keeps that calendar with you, from the preliminary contract to the first night.
We introduce the international remover, the tradespeople of the fit-out and the concierge service that receives deliveries and prepares the house. Transport, customs and works are theirs, under their responsibility: our role is that you arrive in a house that is ready.
Frequently asked questions
Can you drive in France on foreign plates?
Temporarily, on the terms provided for visitors, but not on a lasting basis once your residence is established in France. A vehicle still registered abroad while its owner lives in France stands out quickly, not least to the insurer, who may dispute cover at the very moment it would be needed.
Does a classic car follow the same rules?
It falls under a specific regime, with a collector’s registration available beyond a certain age and technical requirements adapted accordingly. It is often the most workable route for an older vehicle that would stand no chance of approval otherwise. Have the point looked at before shipping, not after.
How long must you keep the vehicle after importing it?
Where the vehicle came in under the transfer-of-residence relief, it must not be disposed of for a period after importation, failing which the duties and taxes become payable. Selling it quickly therefore turns a saving into an assessment. Check the exact period applying to your situation with customs.
